Bridge over the Don River
Railway construction / Bridge over the Don River

Construction of a one-way bridge at the 280th kilometer of Morozovskaya - Volgograd section of Privolzhskaya Railway Line

The work started in November 2011 and is going to be completed in 2017.

Bridge design: 33.6+4x77+110+154+132+33.6 meters. The total bridge length as measured between the bank-end faces of the abutments is of 791.96 meters. The new bridge centerline runs 50 meters south upstream from and in parallel with the centerline of the existing bridge.

Scope of Operations:

  • Building a rotation camp and developing the construction site;
  • Conducting geotechnical/ radar probing surveillance of the construction site on land and underwater to look for explosive items (the site is located in the area of combat activities during the World War II);
  • Building two temporary motorways of a total length of about 13 kilometers;
  • Building unloading dead-end sidings at Lozhki Station and at 278th kilometer block signal station;
  • Building railway approach tracks of a total length of 4.4 kilometers (the subgrade will be in the form of up to 22-meter high embankments on the right and left banks, hydraulically filled with about 3 million cubic meters of earthfill);
  • Building bridge service and paramilitary security guard buildings;
  • Putting in place support footings of a total of 120 each 1.5-meter diameter drilled piles;
  • Building cast-in-place reinforced concrete grillage and supports;
  • Construction of berths, a building berth, and a floating support consisting of two 1,900-metric ton barges;
  • Span structure assembly and installation;
  • Railway track installation;
  • Dismantling the old bridge.

Supports Number 1, 2, 9, and 10 are erected from the land sites and supports Number 3 through 8 are erected from water using a suspended coffer dam. The span structures are installed afloat (2-3, 6-7, 7-8, and 8-9) or they are installed by using scaffolding (3-6) and temporary supports (9-10).

The bridge has span structures of four types:

  • Articulated solid-web girder deck configuration type, 33.6-meter long (spans 102 and 8-9);
  • Articulated trussed pony-type, 77-meter long (spans 2-6);
  • Articulated trussed pony-type, 154-meter long (span 7?8);
  • Articulated trussed pony-type, 132-meter long (span 8?9).

The bridge will support traffic of freight trains weighing up to 12 thousand metric tons moving at a speed of up to 90 kilometers per hour. After the new bridge has been opened for traffic, the old bridge will be closed for reconstruction. The new bridge is scheduled to be commissioned in late 2015. The old bridge will be dismantled.
